Skating skills 4. Crossovers.
Crossovers play a big part in skating. Every skater use crossovers in order to get speed into elements they do on the ice, skating along a curve or circle. Here are our first 5 exercises for crossovers:
Crossovers with change of rhythm. We are going to do 2 slow crossovers followed by 4 quick ones. Repeat this exercise at least 3 times back to back clockwise and counterclockwise, forward and backward. This exercise helps with understanding different pace and improves power.
Crossovers with double plie. Same as first exercise, repeat 3-5 times, do both directions, forward and backward. Improves deep knee and ankle bend, increases extension.
Running or jumping crossovers are great for quickness, balance and coordination. You can start slow and build up your speed and quickness as you go. Keep your arms bent at your elbows and closer to your body, moving as if you were running on a track. Always work both directions to become a more balanced skater.
Crossovers with mohawk transitions prepare skaters for changing more easily between forward and backward skating, which is widely used during programs.
Crossovers with cross behind. Good to work on it at the end of practice for more relaxed, cool down feeling. Extension, knee and ankle bend and proper alignment are required for this exercise. Use of arms improves coordination and helps to breathe properly.
